Freddie Gruber 1927-2011Freddie Gruber was a complexity wrapped in a mystery. He was famous in some circles as a drum teacher to the stars, a man who advised and taught the world's top drummers. A restless spirit who grew up in Jazz age New York, playing drums in the '40s and '50s, Freddie showed great promise and played with a few of bebop's greatest names . But his career was undermined by heroin addiction, which he later kicked after getting help from friends like Buddy Rich and Shelly Manne. After he moved to Los Angeles in the Sixties he became a drumming Yoda, teaching stars from Mitch Mitchell and Jim Keltner to Neil Peart, Peter Erskine Dave Weckl, and Adam Nussbaum. Average fans knew little of him since he neither did clinics nor took new students in recent decades. He passed away last week at the age of 84 and is remembered in a series of stories on Drummagazine.com.Related Stories |
