Fusion Thrives With Jack DeJohnette

By Andrew Lentz Published February 4, 2010

Drummer: Jack DeJohnette

Venue:Yoshi's, Oakland, California, June 12, 2010

It's not everyday you get to see icons like Jack DeJohnette, the legendary sideman to acts as influential as Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett, but tonight it was all about the drummer's talent as a bandleader of the Jack DeJonette Group. The sensitive supportive playing of DeJohnette highlighted the superb melodic journies of saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, guitarist Dave Fiuczynski, and acoustic/electric bassist Jerome Harris. The band performed two completely different 90-minute sets that saw DeJohnette veer from textural essays to tasty fusion beats.

DeJohnette's masterful control and melodic sensibility brought out the best in his band's soloists.
