Bio

Where would the realm of jazz/fusion music be without the drumming of Dave Weckl? Impossible to say. But one thing’s for sure: It would be a lot less interesting. Known as the "Triplet King," Weckl has lent his sticks and style to the likes of George Benson, Paul Simon, Madonna, and, most famously, Chick Corea. He has also gained popularity over the years as the leader of his own group, The Dave Weckl Band.

Weckl was born in St. Charles, Missouri on January 8, 1960, and later attended the University Of Bridgeport in Connecticut. After his stint in college, Weckl made the move to New York City and immersed himself in the budding fusion scene in the early 1980s. He gained a spot in the Chick Corea Elektric Band in 1985 and also performed with Corea’s Acoustic Band over the years. Weckl’s name and influence grew from his time with Corea, leading to session work and performances in the Manhattan Jazz Quintet.

Upon leaving Corea in 1991, Weckl performed and recorded mainly with guitarist Mike Stern, but also with the R&B band Rhythm Of The Soul, showcasing his love for R&B and the music of Motown. Weckl has also released numerous instructional videos, most notably The Zone (2001).

Not only a performer, sought-after session musician, and recording artist, Weckl also knows his equipment, going so far as to help design and craft the Sabian HHX Evolution and HHX Legacy cymbal lines.
