Yamaha's Groove All-Stars (formerly Groove Night) is one of the traditions that makes the January NAMM trade show in Anaheim, California so special. It's an invitation-only bash for Yamaha dealers worldwide. This year's event, on January 19, featured a stage full of drums, three singers, a four-piece rhythm section (guitar, guitar, bass, keyboards), five horns, plus various special guests. Nearly two dozen drummers including the top Yamaha endorsers such as Rick and Jerry Marotta, Dave Weckl, Shannon Larkin and more, took turns playing tunes of their choosing with the outstanding band.
Two days of rehearsals go into the Groove All Stars event, which took place at the Cerritos Center for Performing Arts. Now Yamaha plans to take this show on the road. In 2008 the band and drummers will be playing at Musik Messe in Frankfurt in March and in Mexico. Our advice: Beg, borrow or steal your way into one of these events if you can.
