As a youngster in the tiny town of Worden, Montana, Chad McKinsey would shed in his folks’ house to the disparate likes of Three Dog Night, Chicago, Tantric, hell, even country groups (and The Squid thought his own tastes were eclectic). After making the Montana All State Jazz Band, McKinsey found his life path, first studying percussion at Montana State University then going out and playing everything from ska to reggae in various bands until he formed The Suicide Denial, an electro-rock duo in L.A. with his partner Chad Gerber. Though it’s not immediately obvious, the stylings of Mike Portnoy, Stanton Moore, Buddy Rich, David Garibaldi, Weather Report-era Peter Erskine, and Danny Seraphine fueled his imagination during the record’s composition. Even as he pursues rock stardom, he continues to work on his percussion performance and music education degree, just as a fallback. Now that’s the kind of realistic approach The Squid wished more drummers would take.
