Is there something in the water in Québec? Two issues ago The Squid was big-upping another female Montreal drummer. Unlike the last fille Québecois, Emmanuelle Caplette is no metal-grrrl, but a chops-intensive finesse player well grounded in both the kit and drum corp, the latter of which she joined at age nine (check her snare solo on YouTube). Winning a provincial contest four years in a row would swell the heads of most young players but Caplette steadfastly pursued a music degree, before doing graduate work in jazz at University Of Montreal. Her focus paid off with a music-theater gig, Cavalia,, which toured the States, followed by recordings with top French-language pop singers and, in 2008, a full-time gig playing on a popular Canadian kids TV show. Her sense of time, tasteful ghost notes, and effortless independence will no doubt impress, but it’s the passion for the craft that stays with you.
