John Collin either aspires to be a first-call musician or simply wants to be the most well-rounded instructor on the planet. The Scarborough, Ontario–based player’s DVD is an expert demo of essential grooves from jazz brushes and mambo to shuffle and even songo — a hybrid of rumba, son, and funk — before capping the proceedings with a swinging solo played with traditional grip. He arrived at his current level with old-fashioned hard work, starting with private lessons until earning a jazz degree from Humber College in Toronto. The breadth of his skill set is reflected in the diversity of gigs he has landed, from theater productions and a GNR tribute band to working a cruise ship and touring with the star from Canadian cult TV show, Degrassi High: The Next Generation. It goes without saying he reads charts and can transcribe any lick you throw at him. Would that more players were like ye, Johnny.
