Andrew Giese And The Big WaxWorks Beats
New Blood: Andrew Giese
With 15 years of playing and a steady diet of Led Zeppelin, Andrew Giese is seeing some tasty results in Waxworks, a band that the Chicago-area drummer describes as “blues—rock-and-roll-grunge-psych.” Specifically, it’s the hi-hat—inflected heavy rock shuffle he does in the track “I Got A Woman” that caught our attention (check out the video below to hear it for yourself). “I’m playing a triplet shuffle between the hands and the bass drum on 1 and 3,” says Giese. “The hi-hat is on all four but I’m hitting the hi-hat on the last notes of the triplets of 2 and 4 so it gives it a turnaround kind of feel.” The formally schooled drummer currently studies with Jim Gifford (of Guthrie Govan), and has plans to resume his studies at Columbia College Chicago where he is majoring in drum and percussion performance and minoring in audio design and production.
