Rachel Fuhrer is a tuff Texan drummer who inspires just by the sweaty, go-for-broke approach behind her stripped-down kit. Go and view the Austin Weekly showcase of her new band, Ume, and see if you don’t become a fan of her deceptively subtle cave-woman bashing (alas, she just joined the band so her parts aren’t on recent debut Phantoms). In her other band, We’ll Go Machete, there is evidence of serious chops, mostly recorded in one or two takes. Fuhrer majored in music at University Of North Carolina and continued her studies with Rod Morgenstein at Berklee where, among many concepts, they worked on “two-surface riding” where the right hand plays the ride; the left hand plays the hi-hat. “It’s been a springboard for me stylistically,” Fuhrer says. “And I’ve passed those lessons down to my students here in Texas.” We’d wish you luck, Rachel, but it doesn’t look like you need it.
