The Squid is usually happy when the New Blood candidates send him a CD with fierce drumming and a few tasty licks, but Scott Beddia has the kind of four-way independence that rivals yours truly’s eight arms. With his percussion-based one-man show, indpenDRUM, Beddia has basically created a clinic that showcases how each of his limbs not only has a mind of its own, but how they all come together in full-kit workouts recorded with ambient synth loops to create a seductive soundscape. A young Beddia caught the drumming bug after listening to the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever records before getting lessons from the late, great Alan Dawson and Will Kennedy from the Yellowjackets. Playing tri-toms in marching band further honed his chops. For fun there’s Mr. Dynamite, his James Brown tribute band, playing the East Coast casino circuit to give gambling addicts a taste of the funky drummer.
