Top Drummers On The Scene in Anaheim

Top Artists On Hand For NAMM Show

Today I get a note from funk teaching author Rick Latham that goes like this:

Hi folks,
I'll be playing a cool pre NAMM kick-off concert this Wed. Jan 13th at 6:00 P.M. @ the Anaheim Hilton.....I'll be performing with bassist Roy Vogt and some of his Nashville studio brothers.
I hope you can make it!

Keeping it Funky,

Rick is only one of the many pros, stars, teachers and other artists who will be making the scene at this years NAMM convention, the annual gathering of musical equipment manufacturers and dealers that takes place in Anaheim each January. This year's event, which runs January 14-17 is looking good, with a slew of announced concerts, guest appearances, autograph signings and other events. One special note: Keep your eye out for 11-year old Cole Marcus who we understand will be at the Mapex and Zildjian booths among others. He was featured in DRUM! when he was just 4. If you thought he was a monster then, you should hear him now.

On Thursday look for Stanton Moore & Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste, Dick Dale, Xavier Muriel, Vernon Reid, Walfredo Reyes Jr., Brian Auger, Jorma Kaukonen, John Doe, Davy Knowles, Todd Sucherman, Richie “Gajate” Garcia at the Audix booth during various times of the show. And, we're told Zildjian has a stellar lineup of artists signing posters every day at 1 P.M.

On Friday you'll find Sully Erna introducing rock drum kits at Yamaha at 9:30 A.M. Kevin Riccard, Tiki Pasillas, Joey De Leon, and the great Alex Acuna are at the Vic Firth booth at noon followed by Bryan Hitt, Marc Droubay, Carmine Appice, and Steve Smith at 1:00 P.M. Steve Stephens is at Axis at one, while Ray Luzier, Pete Lockett, and Thomas Pridgen are at Pro-Mark. Alphonse Mouzon, Lenny White, Denny Seiwell, and Ndugu Chancler invade the Vic Firth booth at 2:00. Then at 3:00 P.M., heavy hitters Paul Bostaph, Jeremy Spencer, Charlie Benante and DRUM! cover artist Dave Lombardo will be greeting fans at the Paiste booth, Charlie will also be with Vinny Appice, Brandon Saller and John Dolmayan at Vic Firth, while Derek Roddy visits Axis and Jason Bittner, Barry Kerch, and Jason Bonham invade Pro-Mark.

Later on Friday you can catch Tim Yeung, Jason Sutter, Seven Antonopoulos, Franklin Vanderbilt, and other young stars at Vic Firth at 4:00. Chembo Corniel, Jimmy Delgado, Richie Garcia, Paoli Mejias, Joe Madera, Eddie Montalvo, Armando Peraza, Jose "Pollo" Torres-Nunez, Little Johnny Rivero, John "Dandy" Rodriguez, Manolito Rodriguez, Bobby Sanabria, Charlie Sierra, and Samuel Torres are part of a celebration at LP Music, which at some point in the day will include Carlos Santana. Then at 5:00 P.M. the Vic Firth crew tops off a busy day with JP Patterson, Dave Mackintosh, Simon Wright, and Chad Wackerman.

Saturday is an equally busy artist day with Sheila E at Kaman at 11:00 A.M. Also at 11:00 you can find Eric Valentine, Gerry Brown, Miles McPherson, Chad Wright, Phil Ehart, Bob Breithaupt, Aaron Montgomery, Prairie Prince, Dave McAfee, Russ Miller, and Tony Moore at Yamaha. Zigaboo Modeliste, Ricky Lawson, and others at the Vic Firth booth in the A.M. Mark Schulman (P!NK), Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty), Stefanie Eulinberg (Kid Rock), and Stanton Moore (Galactic) will blaze at the Gretsch booth at noon.

Franklin Vanderbilt (Kravitz), Jason Sutter, Dave McAfee, Toby Keith, and Jason McGerr are signing posters at Paiste at 1:00 P.M. Mark Schulman, Rodney Howard, Brendan Buckley, Chris Bailey fill that time slot at Vic Firth while Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett and Bashiri Johnson are at Kaman. R, Chris johnson (Rihanna) will be appearing at the Vater booth.

It's another extremely busy afternoon at Vic Firth with Kenny Aronoff, Dave Weckl, Peter Erskine, and Joey Heredia at 2:00 P.M. and then a dream lineup of Danny Carey, Thomas Lang, Jojo Mayer, and Vinnie Paul at 3:00. Mike Portnoy, Abe Cunningham, Stephen Perkins appear at Pro-Mark. At 4:00 P.M. look for Alex Gonzlalez (Mana), Aquiles Priester (Hanger), and Rashid Williams (John Legend) at Paiste and Shawn Drover, Corey Pierce, Alex Lopez, and Christoph Schneider at Vic Firth. Anton Fig, Frankie Banali and Stanton Moore guest at Firth at 5:00 P.M.

Saturday night is usually home to a NAMM tradition, the Sabian concert. This year they're putting on quite a show with Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats, Terry Bozzio's dual drum quartet with David Torn and Pat Mastellotto, Steve Ferrone, Leland Sklar, Kevin Ricard and others. There will of course be artists every night performing in the Marriott and HIlton lobbies and there's usually lots of good music there. One that interests us is a Bernard Purdie concert at 11 P.M. on Friday. Prepare to get funked. Yamaha will also have a concert on Friday, celebrating fifty years of the Yamaha Corporation in the US. We'll update you on the artists for that event and others as they become available.

Got a question for an artist or company at NAMM? Query the DRUM! editors on our Facebook page and we'll report back during the show.
