Scott Sosa: Eclectic Speed Demon

Scott Sosa

Age 30
Equipment Pearl drums, Paiste cymbals, Pro-Mark sticks, and DW pedals

With influences that range from The Doors’ John Densmore and U2’s Larry Mullen Jr. to Afrobeat percussion, it’s no wonder Scott Sosa plays with such an unusual but compelling mix of styles. Sosa’s clips are an unlikely collision of swing-era snare drum solos, syncopated Latin beats, and extreme metal. One of the more impressive aspects of his playing is how fast and powerful his strokes are using traditional grip, although he switches easily to matched grip. After graduating from the Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles, Sosa spent five years touring Southeast Asia, London, and the States before getting the odd session gig, such as the recording he made for NASCAR DVD Adrenaline, Vol.1. You gotta hear dude’s remake of REO Speedwagon’s classic-rock radio staple “Riding The Storm Out,” which he turns into a hella busy double bass blow-out that won’t make the original band too happy but will surely please drummers.
