Hello Drummers & Percussionist

My Name is Lerryns Hernández, Drumming is my job, percussion is in my heart and bongo playing is my passion. I live in Caracas, Venezuela and I have been involved with music for about 25 years. I introduce you The Bongo Project.

The whole idea of this project consists in playing with the bongo certain songs that lack any kind of percussion in their original versions. This forces me to play in musicals schemes that are quite strange and new for the bongo. Obviously, I avoided selecting themes that had a Latin sound and really thrived for more adventurous and challenging stuff. Of course, the project’s main trait is that I record myself playing the bongo live, since my initial interest was to promote this idea through Youtube, thus showing the World a unique vision of the bongo and its unlimited possibilities.

Please visit The Bongo Project Channel

All comments are welcome

Peace&Beat;

i use Vic Firth 5b as my regular every day stick but i practice with ( what ever crappy sticks are around or) the Vic Firth Leggireo if i want to dish out the cash. i practicing with them because they build a nice pocket in my finger and there great for building wrist muscles. because there meant for snare players they have a real nice bounce and the head on them allows for more precise hits like on the ride bell or when using the hi-hat for accuracy. i personally have found that the only difference between the woods used for the stick is the price. whats your thoughts on this, & what kind of sticks do you like to use best.

For the past couple years I have played with a guitarist named Daniel Castro, who leads one of the more popular blues bands in the San Francisco area. Unlike most other bandleaders I’ve played with, Daniel gives me lots of drum solos throughout the night — usually at least one per set, but very often two or three. Needless to say, this is a bit of a double-edged sword, in that I love the challenge of trying to define each solo as a separate and unique statement, but often feel like I’m relying on motifs and patterns I’ve played before rather than truly improvising.

But I tried something the other night that shook things up a bit. After playing about 32 bars of a solo, I stood up, grabbed by hi-hat (while playing a ride pattern on the top cymbal), and walked to the front of the stage where I soloed on just the hat. It was fun to try to keep things interesting by trying different rhythmic patterns and open and closed textures — I even played on the stand itself to expand my sound pallette.

Does anyone else have any soloing strategies to share?
