Hello all! I did not find a welcome thread, so I hope it is ok I am posting here. I have been a drummer since 2007. I play on a 5 piece Export with Zildjian A, Paiste PST5, and Wuhan cymbals. I am here to gain some insight and learn more of what it takes to improve my drumming. I can also share what I have learned through my journey. As my Screen Name states, I am a bassist too. I have been one since 1984. Totally love playing it, and still do. But my new found love is the drums. Its mysticism intrigues me.

Amazing book by Joey Kramer!

Although it came out in 2009, I just heard about Aerosmith’s Joey Kramer’s autobio for the 1st time a week ago. Wow-it is personal, revealing, & gut honest! Aerosmith has never been a band that was on my top 10, or that I followed closley. I own their essential recordings, but that’s it. As a drummer, I’ve always liked him, but really never followed him like I do Peart, Portnoy, Carey, Steve Smith, etc. I really found it amazing that after all of the hell the man has been through w/ abuse, abusing, alcoholism, herion addiction, Anxieity, depression, etc. he’s come out on top again. I really suggest that any drummer read this if you’re interested in the goings on in the life of a drummer that’s been @ the top, rock bottom & now back @ the top again! BTW, I have ALWAYS loved Joey’s white powder-coated DW pedals/hdwr. Kudos to “DRUM!” for the focous on Kramer’s 2009 ‘Orange Reptile’ DW Collector’s Maple Kit (issue#202, April 2013)! Donn Bennett wrote a niece piece for the ‘Time Capsule’ column. Donn Bennett’s collection also includes Joey Kramer’s 1997 ‘9 Lives’ tour DW CoolAid Collector’s Maple Kit, as well! The DW CoolAid FinishPly is another Satin Flame finish, like the orange snakeskin FinishPly. That was the last album/tour that Joey used 3 rack toms. It’s on sale for $17,000. IF ONLY…you get the complete set of white DW pedals/hdwr., & his set of Zildjians, too.

Brian Blade

Hello all you wonderful drummers out there. I just attended the Brian Blade fellowship band show here in Chicago at the beautiful old town school of folk. Most of us are familiar with Brian. I myself do not own any of Brian’s recordings but due to his amazing reputation I had to see this show in what I consider a beautiful auditorium. I was completely mesmerized by Brian’s playing. His choice of everything from his tuning, cymbals drums, fills, etc. were absolutely amazing. Just the way he flowed within the songs completely inspired me. I have to say I get something out of 99.9% of drummers I see but Brian’s playing did something else for me. Not sure what that “something else” is but he made me just want to play better. Might sound crazy but I had butterflies in my stomach most of the way home just thinking about playing. Anyway, enough of my rant. Just wanted to share this excitement with other drummers. If you haven’t, check Brian out. Happy Sunday to all you drummers. Nick Kapka, Chicago

Zaragemca’s Top Experience

I have been performing with an Ethiopian Bands which came to Houston for an especial engagement, I have to recognize this unique experience in relation to this music and these musicians. The Music was a unique blending of the multi-color skillfull vocalization which is known in the Indian Music and the brain braking syncopated musical phrases on, a 6/8 time signature. The dynamics between the blending Bass-Guitar-Keyboard and the singer was something never witnessed by me in any, Salsa, Rock, or, Jazz Band, they have a short syncopated musical phrase in a constant response to the lyrics from the singer and interposing others time signature within the, 6/8 main pattern. The people did stay ‘till 4.00 am., dancing to the music, both the dancers and the musicians absolutelly enjoyed the interaction which I have with this Ethiopian Band, and to me it was a top experience. They told me that after the show they have to fly to, East Africa, for another engagement. But later I had more opportunities to play with other singers, like; New Debebe, Ealsa Tesfaye, Kuri Bachew, Elias Tebadal, Shambel Blaynrh, Tsehay Kassa, Setegu Atanaw, Teshager Yilma, Aster Aweke. Folks my respect to this Ethiopian singers and musicians, one of my greatest experiences. Gerry Zaragemca, is a World’s Expert in Afro Cuban Percussion and Caribbean Music
