The “DRUM!” Magazine ‘Time Capsule’ Column!

I have to write about how much I’m enjoying the ‘Time Capsule’ Column that closes out every issue! 2 months ago, it featured Joey Kramer’s last DW Kit-the ‘Orange Reptile’ w/ white pedals/hdwr. I’ve always been attracted to all of Kramer’s DW Kits, the white hardware in particular! He’s w/ Ludwig again, as of 2011. This month’s ‘...Capsule’ featured the legendary Hal Blaine’s Gretsch ‘Timbale Kit’. I own Blaine’s autobiography, & there are mentionms & photos of this kit there. It was awesome to see it in “DRUM!” I really love DonnBennett’s collection of famous Kits! His website is great, too. Keep them coming, Andy (oh, & you mentioned in the article that Blaine’s ‘Monster Octoplus Kit’ will be featured in a future article…I cannot wait!)

Hi SBdee here,
Our new neighbour came around to our house about 3 months after they moved in. I was a bit worried incase he was coming round because he could hear me playing :?
My mum answered the door and I heard him say, I heard drumming, who is the drummer in the house!? I was getting ready to creep upstairs and hide, when I heard him say, well my son is a drummer, and when we moved house all this (produces a huge bag) was left, with a note saying do what you want with it Dad.
Anyway it turned out to be about 40 copies of a drumming mag, along with around 60 cd’s and cd roms of lessons, techniques rudiments you name it!
I was so relieved! a couple of weeks later his son came home from uni, and he invited me round to see, and play his kit, it is a vintage premier one, it was cool, and I don’t feel bad playing, because I know he doesn’t mind!

Old Copies of Drum! Magazine

Hi guys,

I am an avid drummer and filmmaker currently making a new film about a young boy in the 1950s who’s only dream is to be a great drummer like his idols Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich.

I’m reaching out to see if anyone has any old copies of Drum! Magazine they’d be willing to part with. The film takes place in the 1950s and I wanted to have an era-appropriate magazine as a prop for the film.

Slingerland covers

Hello, I’ve got a set of Slingerland covers and I tried to look them up but I couldn’t find anything. I got them with a secondhand drumset
(no Slingerland). They look very nice and are in good condition.
I believe they should be rejoined with a nice set of Slingerland drums, so if anyone is interested or could tell me more about these covers plse contact me, I can sent you some photos: renzen at orange dot fr.

I ran across an old Slingerland snare on business. The guy had not played it in 30-40 years and it has been stored the entire time. the information that I have gathered is that it is a 15x7 and it has a niles badge that dates the drum from 60-62. It has a natural finish. I was wondering if anybody else might have information about the drum (e.g. how rare it is, possible shell composition, etc.)
Any information would be appreciated.

I am not a drummer, but I made a trade with someone. I would like to see if anyone would help me out in telling me the value of this. I’m not sure. It is a 1980 Hard Rock Pearl Maple Shell Drum kit (Black) with all Zildian Cymbals with a 1970s snare that was picked up from Gene Chrisman (one of Elvis’s drummers). The only thing missing is the throne. If anyone could help me out. I would apprecitate it. I also would like to find a home for someone who would appreciate this. Thanks for your help. Over All I would say this is in good condition.

Vintage Rogers 5 line Chrome over brass dynasonic snare in PRISTINE condition

The title says it all. I have a Vintage Rogers dynasonic snare in perfect condition.I mean the original bridge railing is still on with no wear or rust, pitting or anything. This is both a great collectors item and a great play and it’s for sale. I could go on and on about it, but words are not enough. If you know about this drum….well, then you know. Vintage..looking to buy

I do not have any vintage drums, but I am looking to buy. I found a 70’s Slingerland kit that is beautiful, but I am wondering how well this would hold up as I would use it as my primary kit. I currently have a Gretsch Catalina but would need to get rid of it to afford the Slingerland.

In your experience would the Slingerland hold up?

Bought this in 2009….....really quite by accident.

20/12/14 and 5.5x14 matching snare.

I wasn’t looking to buy at the time. I enjoy looking around on eBay and C/L just to see all the cool vintage drums. They’re usually out of my reach being that the drums are most often far away and there’s no way to check them out. I have a nice 2007 Purewood kit so I was just looking. But, there before me was this Gold Sparkle late 50’s (advertised as 60) kit right here where I live! It looked really run down but still….I was pretty excited. My dear wife saw the desperation in my body language and knew something was up. I emailed the seller and we went over to look at them. I was pleased when I saw they were mostly 3ply.

3ply except for the bass = 6ply. When Gretsch was switching from 3 to 6ply in the late 50’s they filled orders with what was available at the time. This kit was bought from a local music store in 1960 and could have gone out of the factory in 59-60. Being that the rack, bass and snare are all 3ply I’m thinking these drums mostl likely were made in the late 50’s and maybe the floor tom was made then too or as late as 1960 depending on when the drums were sent to the music store.

I spent a few bucks buying period correct parts on eBay = Microsensitive Strainer, 8 t-rods and claws for the reso head, 50’s hoop for the reso head, a couple of 50’s mutes, some tom and snare lugs (some of the lugs were damaged) and some tension rods. I custom fit wood flesh-hoops to the shells and tucked new American White calfhide on all the drums (after this photo I tucked a calfhide on the bd reso). I now use an EMAD batter on the bass drum - I like it better than the calf batter on this drum for now.

A very nice 18.5” K Zildjian Sizzle cymbal and a pair of A Zildjian Hats along with the very nice 1121 WFL hihat, Speed King WFL pedal, woodblock, fiber cases (some of the very first ones built by NOMAD = antiques! and in very good shape) and some drumsticks from the music store (long gone now) where the drums were bought.

The drums were one-owner Gary (same name as me). He died in 2005 and his daughter inherited the drums.

Long story….......sorry….but hope some will find interesting.
