1930 Leedy Green Onyx Professional Model

Leedy Snare Drum

Era: 1930s
Dimensions: 14" x 5"
Number of lugs: 8

Leedy introduced several unusual finishes in 1930, including Black Onyx, Rainbow Pearl, and Red Onyx. But Green Onyx wound up being the company’s most rare offering that year; it didn’t even make it into the Leedy catalog. I found this particular drum about eight years ago at The Starving Musician in Santa Clara, California. It is a solid-maple Professional model with engraved top and bottom rims and Nobby Gold hardware, and it also came with a matching bass drum. Thanks to Dave Lovvorn, Starving Musician’s drum-shop manager at the time, who allowed me to buy from the store’s “top shelf.”

  • Do you think this snare drum has a beautifully timeless finish or does it look like pond scum?
