Every kit comes in a black finish, right? So what’s the big deal about the new Motor City Black option now available on Gretsch’s Renown57 drum sets? Okay, think attitude rather than finish and concept rather than design, and you’ll begin to get the picture. Inspired by great American car companies from the 1950s, each drum bears the Renown Chevron – an aluminum triangular teardrop painted white with raised beveled chrome edges and an embossed chrome Gretsch logo – scaled to symmetrically fit that specific shell size.
Built behind the kit’s retro façade lay a host of contemporary features to produce punchy and full tones, including North American rock maple shells built with Renown specifications (22" x 18" bass drum, 10" x 8 and 12" x 9" mounted toms, a 16x" 16" floor tom, and 14" x 6.5 20-lug snare). Mounted toms are secured to the bass drum with Gretsch’s trusty ball/socket double tom holder. To make the striking package even cooler, for a limited time the company will kick in a free matching Motor City Black throne from Gibraltar hardware. The kit’s suggested retail price is $3,010, although they expect sale prices to start at $1,957.
