Ludwig & Ludwig “Top Hat & Cane” Standard Model

Ludwig & Ludwig Snare

Era: 1940—’41
Finish: White Avalon Pearl/Top Hat
Dimensions: 14" x 6.5"
Lugs: 8

Known to collectors as “Top Hat And Cane,” the official 1940 Ludwig catalog name for this finish is Top Hat, and it is among the most rare of Ludwig finishes. Only available from 1940 to ’41, it had a top-hat design that was integrated into the White Avalon Pearl finish, rather than being pasted or painted onto the surface. With a 1940 catalog price of $48.50, the Top Hat snare drum was part of the Ludwig Swing Sensation Outfit that featured matching toms and bass drum. The onset of WWII led to a set of restrictions imposed upon manufacturers of non-military goods, and as a result this finish disappeared from Ludwig catalogs. There are probably fewer than ten Top Hat snare drums in existence as of this printing, and even fewer drum sets.
