Mark McCrocklin's Black Velvet DW Kit

By Jordan Liffengren Published October 15, 2010

“Here are some photos of my new DW kit," says Texan Mark McCrocklin. "Although I live in Dallas, the kit was special ordered through Erik at Cymbal Fusion, in Houston, Texas. [He] worked with me for weeks, coming up with my color and shell scheme, and boy did it pay off. The finish is Black Velvet with satin chrome hardware. I also had DW color match the satin chrome and then spray lacquer two maple kick hoops to match the hardware. They look like they’re metal."

"This kit looks and sounds amazing. To quote John Aldridge — former editor of Not So Modern Drummer Magazine, snare drum engraving master craftsman, and current drum tech with REO Speedwagon, ‘The drummer with the prettiest drums gets the gig.’ Well, since I took possession in January, I’ve been chosen to play on two wildly different albums and asked to sit in for the existing drummer of a notable country artist for a special show in Nashville — I didn’t take the gig. Let's settle with: Looks don’t hurt.”

“Lastly, I requested that John Good and Don Lombardi sign the inside of the kick with a Sharpie, directly on the wood, and they did! They told Erik (Cymbal Fusion) ‘don’t ask us to do that again.’ Apparently we caught them in a good mood because Neil Peart was there with them that day.”
