We recently lost another drum icon, the great Jake Hanna. I knew him mainly from his playing with Woody Herman’s big band, and with the group Supersax, but he was a beloved figure in jazz drumming history, and he will be sorely missed. Here is a 16-bar solo, written in the style of Jake’s playing on a video found on the Drummerworld Web site. Note his musical phrasing and interesting solo ideas. Jake was an innovator whose playing must be included in any serious study of the history of jazz drumming. Please pursue further research and enjoy this master musician.
