I have a real appreciation for the paradiddle, a simple pattern that contains three of the most used elements for a drummer. This rudiment (Ex. 1) contains an accent, a single, and a double. Basic stuff, but it’s all at the core of what we do. Gaining control over the rhythm and dynamics of it at many tempos will serve you well. The rest of the examples here take it one step further by adding a second accent to the paradiddle sticking. Try to practice them with extreme dynamic range for the best results.
