This is a concept that helped me to free up some rhythmic and textural possibilities when soloing. Here we take the little three-note phrase found in Ex. 1 and stretch and it and mold it to fit the rhythmic framework we see in the form of a guide rhythm in the following exercises. As the phrase starts on the right hand, try playing the right-hand rhythm you see in the first measure of each exercise. Then, fill in the rest of the lick evenly. The result should be what is notated in the second measure. But this is only the beginning of the possibilities. You can fill that space in with any of your favorite hand/foot licks.
