This month, we’re going to experiment with some “boogaloo”-style beats in odd time. The term “boogaloo” originated in the 1960s. It is basically the fusion of soul/R&B rhythms mixed with a Latin feel. These are some very funky and danceable beats.
In these exercises, we are taking beats that can typically be played in 4/4 time and converting them to 7/4 by repeating the first three beats of the 4/4 pattern. If you’re not familiar with odd time, one approach to nailing these beats is to learn the first half of it, solid and steady. Then learn the second half. Play them both back to back with fluidity and the odd time won’t even phase you.
