Matt Byrne: Syncopated Sickness
Today we’re going to rock on some syncopated patterns. The beats themselves are straightforward. There are several goals we are trying to accomplish here: A) master the basic independence of each exercise; B) incorporate the left foot into each exercise; and C) slightly accent all the quarter-notes to give the beats a more relaxed “swing” feel.
I recommend initially playing the beats without the hi-hat. When they become comfortable and solid, add the left-foot hi-hat. When you are comfortable and balanced adding the left foot, then start to develop the “swing” feel on the ride cymbal. By gradually incorporating different elements of the beat as you progress, you memorize the beat quickly, become comfortable and relaxed with it, and can gradually add your own fills after every couple of bars.
