In this video lesson, Nate Brown demonstrates the patterns and techniques required to play Josh Freese's drum part on "What We Do" from Devo's new album Something For Everybody. If you’ve heard the track, you might be surprised by how difficult it is to properly execute Freese’s drum part. Blasting out of the speakers, it sounds like a typical Devo-esque backbeat over a four-on-the-floor bass drum line. But the most logical sticking demands that the part be played open handed, with the left hand riding on the hi-hat, so that the right hand is free to hit key tom accents between snare hits. It’s trickier than you might think.
