Matt Byrne: Single-Stroke Cymbal Patterns
Single-Stroke Cymbal Patterns

Let’s take a look at some single-stroke, sixteenth-note pattern beats between the ride and the hi-hat. The first bars are played on the snare, and serve to demonstrate the accent pattern that will be used in all the beats. There are also two varying bass drum patterns – a straight quarter-note pattern and then a broken sixteenth-note pattern. The next two bars are beats incorporating sticking between the ride bell and closed hi-hat, as well as the same bass drum patterns done in the previous bars. The last beat is the same single-stroke sticking done on the hi-hat. The hi-hat is opened on the & of every beat in the measure and the accents are the same.
