With all of the excitement over 3D movies these days, I figured this was a good time to reintroduce one of my favorite exercises: the 3-dimensional paradiddle, also known as the “paradiddle pyramid.” A 3D paradiddle is a sequence of playing a single, double, and a triple paradiddle four times each and then reversing it, playing triple, double, single paradiddle to complete the cycle. Again, I have taken a rudimental concept and applied it to the drum kit, this exercise is a great warm-up and can be used in developing a drum solo or played as part of a fill if applied tastefully. There is no substitute for a strong backbeat and a solid groove but having great facility is a little lagniappe.
