Don’t forget about the double-stroke roll. I’ve noticed that with the growing popularity of linear playing and other more technical approaches to drumming, most drummers tend to forget about the basics, particularly the use of double-stroke-roll patterns (i.e., RR LL RR FF). The double-stroke roll is a fundamental rudiment and one of the most efficient and effective rudiments available to you. Doubles can be really cool when applied to the drum set – for soloing, playing fills, or in a groove situation. Check out these double-stroke patterns, and don’t forget to always develop your own.
