Tiger Bill's Speed Lesson: 6 Steps To 1,000 bpm Part 5

If you've been with us from the beginning of this series, 6 Steps to 1,000 bpm, congrats! You should now be able to play at least one or two measures of continuous single-handed sixteenth-notes at your control speed. If you missed any of the prior lessons, you should go back and work on each one before moving on to this one.

This is the first time in this series that we will be playing single strokes with both hands together. If you recall what I said in the initial lesson, you will never be able to play faster with both hands together than you can play with either hand alone at half that speed. Check out the written notation below. You'll see that when you add your other hand to the mix you will actually be playing thirty-second notes but when you play with one hand alone, you will be playing sixteenth notes.

To explain this further, let's assume you are capable of playing continuous sixteenth-notes with each hand separately at a metronome speed of quarter-note equals 125 bpm. Your individual hands are moving no faster than they do when playing sixteenth-notes separately. But the fact that you must cleanly alternate your strokes together when both hands are playing the thirty-second notes is what will probably slow you down a bit over your single-handed speed. If you find you are having this problem, lower your control speed to the point where you can easily play the single stroke thirty-second notes. Then work your speed back up from there.

Once you can easily play these exercises as written up to your current control speed, reverse your hands. Play the Strong (S) line with your weak hand and the Weak (W) line with your strong hand. You should find this much easier to perform and it will help ensure that both of your hands stay balanced.
