Magazine, our resident drum guru Nate Brown dissects the intricacies of Bill Ward’s drum part on the title track from Black Sabbath’s second album, Paranoid, released in 1970. Of the three Bill Ward video lessons posted on drummagazine.com in recent weeks, this is the most straightforward, demonstrating Ward’s propensity for outright pounding. This part’s relentless sixteenth-note bass drum pattern foreshadows an endless line of heavy metal drum parts that followed in its wake.
