Video Lesson: Learn To Play Sabbath’s “Paranoid”

By Andy Doerschuk Published October 14, 2010

In his latest lesson that brings to life transcriptions published in the print version of DRUM! Magazine, our resident drum guru Nate Brown dissects the intricacies of Bill Ward’s drum part on the title track from Black Sabbath’s second album, Paranoid, released in 1970. Of the three Bill Ward video lessons posted on in recent weeks, this is the most straightforward, demonstrating Ward’s propensity for outright pounding. This part’s relentless sixteenth-note bass drum pattern foreshadows an endless line of heavy metal drum parts that followed in its wake. To read along with the transcription, pick up a copy of the September issue of DRUM! Magazine at your local drum shop, newsstand, or by going here.
