Wally Schnalle: Hand-Foot Connections

In a never-ending quest to bring all my limbs into synchronicity, as well as create a greater vocabulary to access while improvising, I continually devise ways to challenge myself. These are exercise that I have found very helpful for myself and I also see the challenge and benefits it creates for my students. The base of each example is simply a paradiddle sticking played on the hi-hat and snare. The bass drum then plays through permutations of singles and doubles in the sixteenth-note environment. Play them very slow at first. Synchronicity is the key. Speed will come later.
