Random Scenes From NAMM: Day Zero
Be sure to keep your eyes trained on drummagazine.com in the upcoming week. Beginning on Wednesday, we plan to load the website with tons of raw information – blogs, videos, photos, and more – directly from the floor of the 2011 Winter NAMM Show.
As musical equipment companies around the world get ready to converge on Anaheim, California for the annual NAMM (National Association of Music Merchandisers) Trade Show, the gang from SJC Drums leaves Dudley, Massachusetts just in time to escape a brutal snowstorm.
Bob Heil, the legendary founder of Heil Sound, says there are two crucial drum mics on stage: the vocal and the kick drum, and he has been working on new models to solve the problems of both. Here he is interviewed by Phil Hood at the 2010 NAMM show.

Looking back on it, it was perhaps the biggest NAMM show of all time, certainly in the last three years. More than 88,000 buyers, store owners, distributors, artists, agents, fans and musical instrument manufacturers crammed into the Anaheim Convention Center for four days from January 14-17, and they were there to do business. We'll be bringing more reports and images this week on the drums, electronics, microphones, accessories, pedals, hand drums, cymbals, sticks and other products we saw at the show. Here's a quick update.
Manufacturers had one big question as the 2010 NAMM Show began. Would buyers show up or was the recession still on? They got their answer as huge crowds overwhelmed the show on Friday and Saturday. We have hundreds of pics and hours of tape to go through which we'll start showing next week. There's lots of great new electronic drums from Alesis, Pearl and and others; great new snare drums; new pedals at Mapex; loads of new drum mics; dozens of accessories, and some surprising on-the-floor-interviews. Until then, here's a smattering from the floor of the show.
