Rare Workshops With Cuban Legend Piloto
Giraldo Piloto Barreto, master Cuban drummer and leader of the band Klimax will be touring the US this month and playing a clinic in California. The tour kicks off October 17 in Los Angeles, and makes stops in Folsom, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and Portland. If you've never experienced Barreto, and few in the US have ever had the chance, check out the video below at about 1:30 for a taste of his work.
In addition to performances with the band there will also be a special clinic, hosted by John Santos, in San Francisco on October 20 from 6:30-8:00 at the Community Music Center at 544 Capp Street. Tickets are $15. The event is sponsored by KoSA, Sabian, DRUM!, San Francisco Community Music Center.

Cirque Du Soleil Drummer Seeks To Inspire Female Drummers Around The World

The Hit Like A Girl Contest is pleased to announce that < a href="http://www.didinegron.com" alt="Didi Negron, drummer">Didi Negron, drummer/percussionist for Cirque Du Soleil’s "Amaluna,” has signed on as the competition’s celebrity spokesperson for 2015. In her new role, Didi will be a strong advocate for women’s drumming through her performances, events, and media activities. She will also contribute her expertise as a judge for the 2015 Hit Like Girl Contest— scheduled to kick-off on January 15, 2015. “I am excited to start this journey as the spokesperson for the 2015 Hit Like A Girl Drumming Contest,” says Negron. “A critical issue facing young women today is overcoming the obstacles society places on them. This is especially true in the field of contemporary drumming. The Hit Like A Girl Contest has lowered those barriers by raising the visibility of today’s female drummers and inspiring a new generation of girls to play drums. Zildjian Helps Launch My Pits The Pits
Guess who has come up with a great way to help a few deserving high school marching band programs? Zildjian has teamed up with Calderwood Percussion, Remo, Vic Firth, Steve Weiss Music, Lone Star Percussion, Music & Arts and Woodwind & Brasswind to launch the "My Pit's the Pits!" video contest. Music programs across the United States are being given a chance to win over $25,000 in amazing prizes from the top names in percussion equipment. Videos will be submitted for judging, but students can also share and promote their videos via social media to be considered for a "Viewer's Choice" award. Submissions will be accepted from September 8th through October 31st.
Students in high school band programs and percussion ensembles from across the country are being asked to rally their percussion pals to create a brief, entertaining video detailing who they are, why they need new percussion equipment, and what they’re going to do with it, should they win. In each video, entrants are challenged to demonstrate a need for new equipment, introduce their beloved director and band program, and give a brief performance to show off their skills. Production quality is of no major concern, but creativity of presentation will factor heavily into the judging criteria.
Prizes include new cymbals from Zildjian, custom made drums from Calderwood Percussion, mallets and drumsticks from Vic Firth, marching heads from Remo and gift certificates from Lone Star Percussion, Music & Arts, Steve Weiss Music and Woodwind & Brasswind.
