While this is hardly news for drummers, the workout crowd seems to have finally recognized the cardio vascular benefits of drumming, now that two 20-something fitness instructors have started a class called Pound at Crunch Fitness in West Hollywood, California, which has really begun to catch on.
Using both wood and weighted sticks, the instructors lead the group in a series of exercises that involve bashing on the floor in time with hard-charging hip-hop and rock tracks.
The idea first arose when the two instructors attended a party where Guns ’N Roses/Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum performed, and before they knew it, a whole new regimen was born. The resulting hubbub about the class has spread so quickly that the partners plan to expand the Pound model throughout Southern California before introducing it in New York and beyond.
This is all well and good, but seriously – what kind of technique are they teaching? If they’re bashing the floor like a bunch of cavemen, those enthusiastic exercise freaks just might be trading a tight core for carpal tunnel syndrome. Just sayin’.
