Female drumming contest "Hit Like A Girl" is getting bigger and better every year. The sponsors of the annual event have announced plans to expand the program into a year-round, industry-wide promotion of female drummers and drumming. For the Hit Like A Girl 2014 contest, The Summer Set drummer Jessica Bowen has signed on to become an HLAG spokesperson and judge for the second year in a row.
Jess has experienced her fair share of prejudice as a female drummer and holds the Hit Like A Girl contest close to her heart. "It probably throws people off," she says, "because it’s like, 'There’s a girl in the band... but wait, she's the drummer, not the singer?' I remember playing one of our first big shows in L.A. and the audio engineer wouldn't let me soundcheck my own drums. He said, 'Don't worry, I'll hit them like a girl.' I realized then that even though the band was blowing up, I'd still have to overcome the stereotypes and preconceptions that all female drummers face. However, I'm glad to see those perceptions are changing as people see more and more successful female drummers in what I hope is becoming a less and less male-dominated drumming world."
