A beloved jazz drumming legend will be honored in his hometown of Dorchester, Massachusetts on August 8. The Jake Hanna Hometown Celebration will kick off at 2:00 p.m. at Florian Hall (55 Hallet Street, 617-288-6666) with stories of Hanna’s life as well as musical performances featuring saxophonist Harry Allen, guitarist Howard Alden, bassist Joel Forbes, vocalist Rebecca Kilgore, cornet player Randy Reinhart, trumpeter Warren Vache, and drummer Joe Ascione playing one of Hanna’s drum sets. The former house drummer at the famed Boston hotspot Storyville, sideman with with Harry James and Woody Herman, and 11-year resident drummer on The Merv Griffin Show, Hanna died last February from complications of blood disease. He is buried In Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester.
