Legendary Teacher Freddie Gruber Dies At The Age Of 84

We just learned that the legendary jazz drummer and educator Freddie Gruber died today.

Born in 1927, Gruber first made a mark on the New York be-bop scene where he befriended and became roommates with the virtuosic jazz drummer Buddy Rich.

After settling in Los Angeles, Gruber would later apply much of what he saw in Rich’s playing style to his own infamous teaching method.

“Style, technique, and guts,” is how he summed it up, and students such as Neil Peart, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, and Dave Weckl lined up to soak up just some of Gruber’s wisdom.
