We are saddened to report that Richie Hayward, founding drummer for Little Feat, passed away today after struggling with liver cancer for more than a year. His condition took a bad turn last Saturday when he was admitted to ICU with a sudden onset of pneumonia, although hopes were high that he would make it through the episode.

Little Faat left the following message today on the band’s Facebook fan page: “Respected by many as a musician, loved by more as a person. R.I.P. Richie.” Hayward fought the disease without the benefit of health insurance. Tomorrow night’s Rhythm Night benefit will continue as planned at the San Jose Repertory Theatre to help Hayward’s family offset the expenses that have accrued while he was ill. Tickets are still available at the door or by going here.

Rest in peace, Richie.
