Louie Bellson’s Daughter Passes Away At 49

Louie Bellson's Daughter Passes Away On July 4

By Andy Doerschuk Published July 26, 2009

Tragedy struck the Bellson family for the second time. Only five months after the February death of Louie Bellson, Dee Dee Bellson, the daughter of the late jazz drummer and singer Pearl Bailey, died of a heart attack on July 4 at her home in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was 49.

After Bellson and Bailey married in London in 1952, the couple adopted two children, Dee Dee and Tony. As a youngster, Dee Dee quickly showed talent as a singer, and occasionally appeared with her mother on television and variety shows. After studying at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California, she went on to perform with both jazz and rock acts, including Weather Report, The Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow, Sheena Easton, as well as her father's big band.

To make a tax-deductible donation in memory of either Bellson, write Louie's or Dee Dee's name on the memo line of your check. Make payable to “Emmanuel Baptist Church,” and mail to:
