It took quite a while, but women are now fully embraced by the drumming community for their many contributions both onstage and behind the scenes. So it’s fitting that The Percussion Center – the only music store specializing in drums and percussion in Houston, Texas – was named one of the Top 50 Fastest Growing Woman-Owned Businesses In Houston. All 50 businesses were honored at a luncheon sponsored by the Houston Business Journal, Omni Bank, Aetna, The National Association Of Women Business Owners, and the Women's Business Enterprise Alliance. Donna Fisher, President of the Percussion Center, accepted the award celebrating a growth of 156 percent since 2002 and 20.6 percent from 2007 to 2008. “Being a female-friendly store and a community-oriented business are both important to me,” says Ms. Fisher, who remembers feeling conspicuous and out-of-place when, in her thirties, she took drum lessons at a different store.
The times aren’t just a’changin’ ... they’ve changed!
