In case you haven’t heard, July is Pete Escovdeo month. To celebrate the 75th birthday of this giant among West Coast timbaleros, Escovedo has undertaken a two-week series of 75th birthday concerts spanning from Southern to Northern California, including a July 3 date at the famed Hollywood Bowl and culminating this week with a four-night run at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland. (Tomorrow night is his last date at Yoshi’s. Try to catch it if you’re in town.) The shows have been attended by members of the Escovedo clan, both onstage and off, celebrity percussionists and assorted familia alike, including daughter Sheila E. and sons Juan and Peter Michael playing with the patriarch’s 11-piece band. The San Jose Mercury News reported that at the end of the show Pete said, “God bless you guys. I'll see you when I’m 76.” It’s interesting to note that Escovedo didn’t book a gig on his actual birth date, July 13. Now I bet that was the hottest party of them all.
