In a surprise move, the UK’s historic drum company Premier has acquired the assets of KD Drums, a small custom drum maker based in the Northwest of England.

The takeover will see the formation of The Premier Drum Company Limited, which will be the research, development, and UK manufacturing operation for Premier Music International Limited beginning next month. Keith Keough, KD’s former manager, will now take on the role of head of manufacture for Premier.

This news heralds a return to UK manufacturing for Premier, which had previously moved its production offshore to Asia and all but shuttered its British facility. The Premier Drum Company will now operate and manufacture from a new factory in Lancashire with production starting in February 2012, allowing time for KD Drums to fulfill all existing orders before turning itself to Premier instruments.

Premier will launch the initiative with a line of high-end British-made snare drums, which will debut at the January 2012 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. This will be quickly followed by a second snare drum range that the company will introduce the following March at the Frankfurt, Germany music trade show Musikmesse. Premier plans to begin manufacturing British-made drum set and marching percussion in 2013.
