Mike Mangini tests the physical limits of technique in a scene from the documentary A Drummer’s Dream
Step aside Avatar. On May 9, the world will be introduced to the beauty and mysteries of drumming when the movie A Drummer’s Dream premieres at the 2010 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto.
The film, produced by Canadian filmmaker John Walker (himself a former drummer), chronicles a drum camp that took place last summer on a remote farm in the beautiful surroundings of the Canadian Shields. The camp featured many of the greatest drummers on the planet teaching workshops and espousing the benefits of the most ancient of musical arts. Steering the clinics featured throughout the documentary are Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Raul Rekow, Dennis Chambers, Mike Mangini, Nasyr Abdul Al- Khabyyr, Kenwood Dennard, and Giovanni Hidalgo.
A handful of the featured drummers will be premiere, including Al- Khabyyr, Rekow, and Chambers. No information is presently available about when the film will be available for general release, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out.
