The 2011 Winter NAMM Show is right around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited about the new gear demos and special company events that will take place during those four power-packed days. We’ll be sure to muscle our way to the front row when Zildjian presents an Educational Lifetime Achievement Award to legendary drum teacher, jazz drummer, and long-time Zildjian artist, Freddie Gruber on Saturday, January 15 at 4:00 p.m. The award will be presented by Zildjian CEO Craigie Zildjian and Zildjian’s Vice President of Artist Relations & Event Marketing Worldwide, John DeChristopher, at the Zildjian Booth.
Born in New York, Gruber came up in the nascent New York be-bop scene where he gigged with Charlie Parker and other jazz greats and met his close friend of 60 plus years, jazz legend Roy Haynes. It was his roommate and longtime friend, Buddy Rich, who most influenced his teaching, namely Rich’s “style, technique, and guts.” The list of drum luminaries who have studied with Gruber include Adam Nussbaum, Ian Wallace, Neil Peart, Steve Smith, Mike Baird, John Guerin and Dave Weckl.
