Mike Portnoy's Typical Day In A Promark Commercial
Mike Portnoy is featured in a new video commercial from Promark. We won't give it away but it's a day-in-the-life look at Winery Dog drummer and one of the best video ads we've ever seen in the drumming industry. We're also grateful that DRUM! makes a cameo appearance as well. Thanks, Mike.

Alfred Music Releases New Hand Percussion Method
Alfred Music's new An American Approach to World Percussion is a comprehensive study of world percussion instruments from an American jazz perspective. The central purpose of this book is to broaden the horizons of those already familiar with traditional applications of these instruments by offering jazz sensibility. Musicians will learn methods for djembe, doumbek, tambourine, shakers, and more that can be combined with four-part coordination. To demonstrate the commonality of approaches among instruments, techniques are frequently interchanged. An American Approach to World Percussion comes with over an hour of video instruction and encourages the student to ignite their own imagination to develop a vast world of world music. Also included in this book are world music variations of examples found in Ted Reed's Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer. SRP $16.99.
Sabian Education Network Hosts Event At Vics Drum Shop In Chicago
With SEN director Joe Bergamini moderating, the teacher attendees listened to Victor Salazar (owner of Vic’s Drum Shop) discuss promotion and marketing your teaching business, Rich Stitzel (Chicago drummer and educator) focus on finding purpose as a teacher, and Meg Thomas (Chicago percussionist, drummer and educator) explain how to customize lessons for each student.
A highlight of this event was having drum legend Billy Cobham on the panel. Billy discussed his upcoming Art of the Rhythm Section Retreat (coming up in August in Mesa, AZ), and various aspects of performing and teaching. After the event, as the educators networked, Cobham mingled with the attendees, posing for pictures and answering questions.
“The Sabian Education Network (SEN) is doing great things. If you are a drum educator this is definitely an organization you should be a part of. With master educator and killer musician Joe Bergamini at the helm you know you are going to have access to high-quality educational material covering a full spectrum of topics,” said panelist Rich Stitzel. “It was a pleasure to be on the panel alongside Joe, Meg Thomas, Vic from VIc's Drum Shop, and Billy Cobham. Some deep, heavy, and relevant information was shared and the attendees seemed very inspired. I am honored to be part of an organization that is truly dedicated to evolving and expanding the methods of drumset education"
Drum teacher Scott Paeth of Chicago won the giveaway prize, an AAX 21” Stage Ride, and once again the feedback was positive from the grateful and inspired educators who attended, including Kelli Rae Tubbs who made the trip from the Minneapolis area.
