In The Studio With Mark Schulman

Mark Schulman

The 8’ x 8’ vocal booth originally served as the drum room back when the studio was just four thin walls over a garage. “To me, the magic of a great drum sound is the room,” says Schulman. “No reverb I’ve ever used in my life can ever really emulate the sound of an actual room — an acoustic room with drums in it.”

For the all-important bass drum, Schulman will typcially place a Beta 52A dynamic mike dead center, and then either a Yamaha Subkick (not pictured), or a secondary mike like an SM7 or some kind of tube mike, about 2.5’ out in front.
