Hit Like A Girl Winners Celebrate At Drumchannel

The 2013 Hit Like A Girl Contest concluded last night with a live global webcast on Drumchannel featuring the winners in the Over 18 and Under 18 divisions. Valeria Sepulveda of Chile was the winner in the older category while 10-year old Alexey of Las Vegas, Nevada won in the Under 18 category. The event was hosted by DRUM! publisher Phil Hood, Tom Tom Magazine publisher Mindy Abovitz and judges Meytal Cohen, Shauney "Baby" Recke and Jess Bowen of the Summer Set (via Skype).

More than 300 girls and women from 35 countries entered the contest in February. After 45 days of fan voting, the finalists and wildcards were selected on April 1. Then a panel of celebrity drumming judges selected three winners in each group. Judges included Beyonce drummer Kimberly Thompson, jazz star Allison Miller, The Summer Set's Jess Bowen, ex-Hole and Peachez star Samantha Maloney, Hannah Ford from Prince's 3rd Eye Girl band, Youtube star Meytal Cohen, Shauney "Baby" Recke formerly of Pussycat Dolls and other bands, Elaine Bradley of Neon Trees, and Dawn Richardson the 4-Non Blondes star currently teaching and performing with Mental 99.

Kicking Out With Alexey

The show kicked off with a highlights reel of all the finalists and an introduction of the Under 18 winner and runners-up. Shauney "Baby" Recke was on hand to present the awards for younger girls. Thirteen-year old Madden Klass took third place. Her video featured her playing solo in a variety of styles. Seventeen-year old Taylor Ann Katase came second playing a cover of Beyonce's "Till The End Of Time." She credits her teacher and Bruno Mars (a fellow Hawaiian) as inspirations. First place went to Alexey from Las Vegas, Nevada. She started playing at age six after spending a year talking her parents into getting her a drum set. In her video she kills a cover of Five Finger Death Punch's "Over It And Under It."

Most Inspiring

Four drummers were mentioned for special recognition by judge Meytal Cohen. These drummers were chosen for their tremendous enthusiasm and an inspiring personal story. These awards belonged to seven-year old Gaia, who says she is influenced by the Doors and Justin Bieber (!) and 10-year old Marlhy In the 18+ category the recognition went to Shelby Harper whose personal story described how drums and her religious faith helped her overcome drug and other problems. And, the last ward went to Little Drummergirl, a 47-year old player who took up drums at age 44 after playing Rock Band and now gigs regularly. Marlhy won the Most Inspirational award. At the age of 11 she plays in 4 bands, some with top college musicians, and recently appeared at South by Southwest. As Mindy Abovitz of Tom Tom Magazine said, "These girls and women really represent the spirit of what "Hit Like A Girl" is all about.

The Over 18 awards were presented by Jess Bowen of the Summer Set. Third place was captured by Drummergirl KC who knocked the judges with out with a remixed triply electronic track, while playing in high heels! The first runner-up was Austrian entrant Michaela Brezovsky. Another 23-year old, Michaela started drumming at age 10 and has performed and studied orchestral percussion as well as playing in pop bands.The grand prize winner is Valeria Sepulveda of Chile, who is currently living and studying in the US.
