NAMM
HB Drums snuck into the market several years ago with a unique concept – to sell American-made drums at prices so low that they are almost unbelievable. Well, believe it.

Check out part two of our eye-opening tour of Zildjian’s Gen 16 booth at the 2011 NAMM Show. In this edition, we look at the Groove Player iPhone/iPad ap, which will feature about 10,000 grooves when it debuts online next month, enabling songwriters and producers to download pristine studio drum tracks played by top Zildjian artists.

When we bum-rushed Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake and his girlfriend at the Sabian Party at the Anaheim Hilton during the NAMM show, we thought the imposing Swede might pulverize us as bad as he does those double bass drums. Turns out the guy’s a big teddy bear and was more than happy to let us grill him on the band’s as-yet-untitled album, slated for release this fall.

While trolling the halls of the 2011 NAMM Show last month, we ran across a first-time exhibitor – Lamb Drum Company – run by proprietor Monty Lamb. The young company’s sole product was a steel-shell snare drum. Doesn’t sound all that unusual, does it? Except for one hitch – it’s shell is a full one inch thick and weighs ... well ... heck of a lot.

Man, are we out of the loop or what? We just stumbled upon this new Reference Series Pure kit at the Pearl booth, and don’t know much about its construction — at least not yet. We’ll make a point to get the whole lowdown during the show. In the meantime, here’s a preview.

As we wandered around the massive drum and percussion room at NAMM 2011, we ran across the Stagg booth, which had grown in size and moved from its previously distant location a couple rooms away. It might be
surprising to learn the importance of such symbolic gestures at NAMM.
